This was fun! Minor character backstories ftw

Matt:

10. How does your OC react when they’re embarrassed?

Well, first off he’s the oldest of four kids (idk genders, at least one sister) and his dad’s not around so he’s changed diapers and bought tampons and that stuff doesn’t really phase him. He’s more likely to be embarrassed about feelings, see talking with Sara about getting engaged to Mai:

Sara can feel herself blushing, looking down, acting like a little girl and she's kicking herself for being ridiculous when Mai reaches over and puts her hand over Sara's. "I know, it's kind of goddamn terrifying," she says. "I freaked out with my friends for weeks before I asked Matt."

"You asshole!" Sara says, smacking Matt upside the head, "you didn't tell me she asked you!"

Now it's Matt's turn to blush. "I was thinking about asking!" he says, defensive, "but I was going to do it all official, ask her parents first, and Mai's parents are goddamn terrifying!"

"It's kind of true," Mai says, with a smile, "my mom was a high school principal and my dad worked passenger trains."

"And they're both taller than me, and I was just some kid working in a mechanics shop and who was I to marry their daughter..."

And that gets him another smack on the head, this time from Mai. "So I got tired of waiting, and asked him. We told our parents after, together."

I think the things he’s ACTUALLY embarrassed about, instead of cute whoops feelings embarrassed, mostly have to do with growing up in a not-great part of town with no money. It doesn’t come across much in Rokia POV stuff because he’s better off than she is, but in the Sara stuff you see it a little. Anyway, for that stuff I think he probably just goes very quiet and tries to exit the situation as fast as possible. His dad would get drunk and come home and yell and break stuff and hit people before he got killed in a factory accident, so Matt sees male anger as scary and destructive. So when kids would make fun of him he'd just kinda shrug, which is actually pretty effective if people are looking for a reaction. And then he’d go home and tell his mom and she’d hug him and tell him how helpful and smart he was and he’d feel better.

whoops accidental sad bb Matt sorry >>

12. Are they a morning person or a night owl?

Morning, which always annoyed Sara when they were in school together (they're the same age) because she is very not. They eventually made a rule he wasn’t allowed to talk to her until after their first class.

14. If you could compare your OC to an animal what would that be?

A bear: usually content to roll around eating berries and enjoying life but heaven help you if you fuck with it or its cubs (/friends). The hufflepuffiest huffle to ever puff.

Alister:

17. Describe some of their hobbies!

lol does “overthrowing the government” count as a hobby?

Not so much a hobby, but Alister pays attention to stuff. So he learns a lot about the districts he’s assigned to, which becomes a problem when he’s assigned to Eleven and realizes how fucked up the situation is. He’s always wanted to do the right thing and that’s been fine because he was in chill districts, but then in Eleven he sees a PK kill a kid for stealing fruit, and he just can’t make that okay in his head. He knows how little those kids have, he knows how little that piece of fruit costs, he knows right from wrong and this isn’t it. After that he…well, pays attention some more, and talks to some people, who talk to some people, and by the time 75 runs around he’s got a handful of guys with him and is blowing up his own barracks.

That sort of thing doesn’t leave a lot of time for actual hobbies. I think he probably is seen as a bit of a loner: good guy, polite, doesn’t open up much, sticks to the rules (because when you’re breaking the big rules you don’t break the little ones. Or as Leverage puts it, nobody speeds when they’ve got a body in the trunk). Probably more likely to play pickup sports than to play cards—stuff that’s less talking and more physical.

18. Describe their sleeping habits

I mean, he was at the Centre until he was about 16, and then the Academy and the PKs, so he is both used to sleeping on a strict schedule and aware of how much he can push that if he needs to. He’s pushing pretty hard when he’s with the D9 rebels because they don’t know anything and he’s half convinced they’re gonna all get themselves killed if he lets them out of his sight.

Lucerne is the only person who can get away with telling him to go the fuck to sleep, and then only sometimes. She has a pretty good “son, just don’t,” face.

19. What are some of their strengths

Ha, strangely enough (or maybe actually not), he’s very loyal and very principled. Cares a lot about what’s right, less about what’s legal. Is loyal to his people, less to organizations and causes—at least by the time we meet him. He’s a pretty loyal Peacekeeper until they, in his mind, break trust with him. At which point the moral thing to do is to defect. And his job is to protect people, and these people are fucking lunatics who are going to get themselves killed, but they’re HIS fucking lunatics, and he’s going to do what he can to keep them safe.

(there is a contingent of ex-PKs after the war who were working with folks in the Districts. They get together and trade stories about the crazy shit their people pulled, but so help you if you weren’t out there and you say anything bad about the Districts…)

2. Does your OC have a temper?

People don’t expect her too, because about 90% of the time Rokia is quiet and withdrawn and pragmatic (when she’s on her own time, rather than playing Victor Rokia). Getting angry doesn’t get shit done. But every once in a while she hits a wall and kind of goes off. The most likely trigger for that is people doing anything to her sisters, or hinting that they might. At which point she will come at you with everything she’s got. This can become slightly absurd, like when (10 years postwar) Kadi is studying at Beetee’s polytechnic and Rokia’s about to go fight Beetee because he made Kadi feel stupid. (Kadi’s like FUCK’S SAKE I’M FINE I JUST HATE DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS please do not go fight my teachers.)

She blows up at Sara just after the war because Sara’s being optimistic about reconstruction and Rokia’s… the opposite of that: she doesn’t know where her sisters are (and just has to hope they’re alive), she’s working absolutely ridiculous hours trying to keep cargo moving by air while the rail grid is down, everything is hard and scary and awful and she just snaps. Phillips gets milder versions of this kind of thing a lot before he leaves.

When Rokia’s at Lyme’s postwar she goes through a period of just being angry, in general, at everything, which means she’s much more likely to snap at people over stupid shit because it’s just the drop that pushes her over the edge. Lyme gets the worst of it, but Lyme is also very much okay with that because well, girl’s got good reason to be pissed. And anger is better than shutdown, which has tended to be the response before that.

19. What are some of their strengths

She’s incredibly stubborn. A strength or a weakness, depending on the situation really, but it’s a big part of what keeps her alive, so we’ll count it. She’s resourceful and creative, because growing up with no resources she had to learn to improvise. She’s not book-smart, but she’s got a good intuitive sense for how mechanical stuff works, because she’s been doing this kind of stuff since she was eight years old and she pays attention. (That second part is important. Not everyone pays attention enough to generalize to underlying principles.) It’s pretty hard to get into the circle of Her People but once you’re there she’s very protective. This is funny when she’s like I WILL FIGHT YOU at people who are giving Lyme a hard time, given that Lyme’s twice her weight and a full foot (er, 30cm) taller. (Right after the war Rokia hears Lyme arguing on the phone with a guy from 6 who’s fucking with cargo shipments to Two, grabs the phone from Lyme and tells him off. And it works. And Lyme’s like …..huh.)
