Lyme knows what she's getting herself into--she thinks. She's not at all sure it's a good idea, but what else is she going to do?

(completely self-indulgent recovery-fic, sorrynotsorry)

Immediately follows Rokia goes to Lyme's for the first time, contains...the kinds of things you'd expect from early postwar Rokia fic.

Things that make me optimistic about new-therapist (after 2 sessions):

1. She actually uses scientific language and a relatively high level of jargon, which I like because, well, I’m a scientist even if psychology is not my field and science-language is comfortable. But also because it feels like she’s paying enough attention to realize that and not just doing the same thing for everybody.

2. She will say things like “I know this sounds weird and you might not like it, but give it a shot because there’s evidence it works” e.g. when talking about visualization stuff (also “A lot of people say ‘visualize a safe place’ but I like to call it a calm place because sometimes nowhere actually feels safe” yes good)

3. Good concrete metaphors for things, that don’t feel patronizing.

4. Was completely unimpressed by my level of education/weird global travel stuff. Did not realize how nice this would be until I was explaining like 10 years of mental-health-relevant history that occurred on four continents and she was just like “okay” and did not make it A Thing. (this sounds like a humblebrag but is not intended that way sorry)

5. Somehow (people-magic idk) makes me feel like I don’t have to be polite or pretend to know less than I do.

6. I don’t feel like I have to know what I want to do when I walk in--it’s not like she’s steamrolling me but it’s not just like “what do you want to talk about today?” and when she asked something about what was bothering me most and I went ????? she just said “okay then let’s work on distress tolerance and skills for de-escalating brainweasel attacks” (not what she said but I don’t remember the phrasing) and we did that and it was actually useful

It's just messy (6577 words) by kawuli
Chapters: 1/2
Fandom: Dragon Age II
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Female Hawke/Isabela
Characters: Female Hawke, Isabela (Dragon Age)
Additional Tags: Missing Scene, Questionable Coping Mechanisms, dead mom feelings, self care is killing darkspawn
Summary: It would be tempting to claim that Isabela is always there when Hawke needs her, but we know that isn't true. It's just not entirely wrong, either. And sometimes taking care of a friend is hauling her out to get drunk and kill bad guys (not necessarily in that order), or convincing her to listen to her selfish desires instead of the responsible ones for once. And for all Hawke and Isabela might deny it, there's no avoiding bringing some feelings into this.

(begins after Leandra's death, canon compliant through Act 2, no promises for Act 3)

In case you missed it, I started playing Dragon Age 2, and to the surprise of absolutely no one I have a lot of feelings about f!Hawke and Isabela. And (also to the surprise of no one) the longer thing I’m writing is full of awful, so I wanted a counterpoint.

Early Act 2-ish, after they get together but before the stuff with Leandra. And if I could write sex there would be some but I can’t so you’ll just have to use your imagination.

Isabela reluctantly has feelings )

10. How does your OC react when they’re embarrassed?
11. Birthday!
12. Are they a morning person or a night owl?
13. Is there anything you would have changed about your OC?
14. If you could compare your OC to an animal what would that be?
15. Give me a description of their family

Surviving just by questioning (3207 words) by kawuli
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Hunger Games Trilogy - Suzanne Collins, Hunger Games Series - All Media Types
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Original Characters
Additional Tags: Alcohol, Questionable Coping Mechanisms, references to forced prostitution
Series: Part 7 of Smiles and Promises
Summary:

Because train crews are entirely predictable, Sara gets no end of teasing when Rokia’s Victory Tour starts.

And then the Tour gets to the Capitol, and for the next three days any time someone turns on the TV it’s gossip channels showing clips of parties, Rokia with a parade of Capitol celebrities, smiling and flirting, drinking and dancing like she’s having the time of her life.

It turns Sara’s stomach.

And we've been burned by all our fears
Just from growin' up around here
Our father's factories marked our cards
While Eden burned against the stars

And Sally said, Sally said
"I can't take no more regret"
It cut us deep into our souls
Came and climbed into our bed
(Gaslight Anthem, Meet me by the river's edge)

This takes place about 10 years postwar, making Kadi 20, Alima 22, and Rokia 32. Kadi's studying at the Polytechnic school Beetee helped set up in District Two, and living with Rokia (and Sara when she's not on the trains).

I really have no excuse for this, or for the fact that it ended up being 24k words long. Brains, amirite?

Because it's March now ... did February feel interminable to anyone else? ... I'm updating my fic totals and yelling them into the void.

January writing:
General fanfiction: 7387
Rebellion fic: 11940 (this is not included in general fic because it is Important Fic)
Total: 19327

February writing:
General fanfiction: 20208
Rebellion fic: 2132 (oops)
Total: 22340

Good news: more words! Look at all those words. Bad news: only 10% or so of them were on the Rebellion fic. Hopeful news: I sorted out one of the things that was stalling me on that one. Less-hopeful news: omg I have so much work to do why do I have to do a real job and write a thesis.

What it says on the tin. Hopefully this is interesting and not just annoying?

Things i wrote/etc:

I went to the Lesbians who Tech Summit in San Francisco. It was awesome. (LWT site) (my post about it)(I will probably write more about this but not today)

I rambled about agriculture, this time on how EU policies are bad for African farmers

Things I just reblogged but are great so I want to share/be able to find them again ever:

Funny Bucky roleplayish blog gives good advice for escaping hugs

Kelly Sue DeConnick's advice: "Be terrifying"
kawuli: (Default)
1. In the third grade, math was all about timed multiplication tests. I kept failing – I couldn’t manage to memorize my multiplication tables, I had ways of getting to 7 x 8 = 56 but they took too long. I hated math, through third and fourth and fifth and most of sixth grade–and then we got to do some algebra, as a sort of sneak preview, and instead of memorizing “this is how you calculate the least common denominator” there were rules and logic and the fact that I still didn’t really have my multiplication tables memorized didn’t matter, because it wasn’t about that.

2. On the last day of seventh grade, our math teacher sent the boys out of the room, ostensibly to carry heavy boxes somewhere. “Hey!” we said, because we were strong too. But our teacher already knew that. He stood in the front of the room and said “A lot of girls stop liking math in high school. You’re going to hear that girls just aren’t good at math. You’re going to get told it’s not cool to like math. So right now I want to tell you: You’re all smart enough. You’re allowed to be good at math, you’re allowed to love it. All of you can be good at this.”

3. I went to Caltech. I hated programming, I was bad at it, the classes assumed you’d been coding for fun since you were twelve and I’d never done it before. I was never going to be able to write code, I decided. I just wasn’t good at it. And then, four years later, I started a Master’s degree in agronomy. I hate Excel. I need to find a better way to analyze data than the cookbook nonsense I was learning in class. I install R. I start using it, because the only way I’ve ever managed to learn anything is by diving in and trying not to drown. I start writing scripts. I’m not good at programming, I’m not an expert, but I can do it. It’s not magic.

4. I need python, for work–or maybe I don’t need it, maybe I could use R, but python is faster. I can learn this, and I do. I need new tools: I need remote sensing, I need SQL, I need open source when my licenses run out. I need new things, so I learn them. I poke my fingers into all kinds of different toy boxes. This is something I am good at: I’m allowed to say that. I’m allowed to be good at it. I’m allowed to love it.

I’m allowed for a lot of reasons, but one of them is that, way back in the beginning, Mr. Ropp took the time to say yes, you can do this.
