English major/elementary teacher pitching in to say that in English, "vulgarizing" actually means neither of those things! It means to make something less refined or complex, but in a bad way -- so like someone vulgarizing science would be the equivalent of bad science journalism that gets misinterpreted by one's aged uncle on Facebook.
